There are certain venues that feel like they were made for love stories—and Franciscan Gardens in San Juan Capistrano is one of them. Tucked in the heart of historic downtown, this Spanish-style courtyard is a photographer’s dream. We recently had the joy of capturing Michelle and James’ beautiful wedding there, and it quickly became one of our favorite celebrations of the year.
The day began with soft morning light filling the nearby bridal suite, illuminating every detail as Michelle got ready with her bridesmaids. Laughter, champagne toasts, and sweet quiet moments filled the room. Just a short walk away, James and his groomsmen enjoyed a relaxed morning of their own. One of our favorite things about shooting in San Juan Capistrano is how everything is so close, offering endless photo opportunities in every direction.
Before guests arrived, Michelle and James shared a private first look surrounded by rustic adobe walls and lush greenery. It was intimate, emotional, and the perfect way for them to center themselves before the big celebration. The historic charm of San Juan Capistrano added a timeless feel to their portraits—warm tones, soft textures, and that old-world romance that makes this area so special.
Their ceremony took place in the courtyard at Franciscan Gardens, transformed with soft, romantic florals. As guests settled beneath the market lights, the space felt cozy, elegant, and full of anticipation. Michelle and James exchanged heartfelt vows framed by garden greenery and the late-afternoon glow—an absolutely breathtaking moment to witness.
Before the ceremony, we snuck off with Michelle and James away for a short golden hour portrait session at the mission. The warm, glowing light wrapped around them as they walked through the courtyard, creating some of our favorite images of the entire day.
As night fell, the courtyard shifted into a romantic, open-air celebration. Candlelit tables, lush florals, and twinkling lights created an atmosphere that felt straight out of a European garden party. Michelle and James shared their first dance beneath the stars, surrounded by loved ones who filled the night with cheers, laughter, and some incredible dance-floor energy.
From the emotional first look to the lively celebration under the lights, Michelle and James’ wedding was filled with heartfelt moments and thoughtful details. Franciscan Gardens provided the perfect backdrop for a day that was both elegant and effortlessly relaxed—just like the couple themselves.
We’re so grateful to have been a part of this incredible day and can’t wait to return to this stunning venue again.
